In April 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will begin mailing new cards to Medicare beneficiaries that feature a randomly assigned number known as a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

Starting April of 2018 through April of 2019, Medicare will be sending out new Medicare cards that will no longer have your Social Security number. Instead they will include a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. This way, Medicare recipients will be less likely to have their identity stolen.
